The Prestigious Arte y Pico Award
I am beyond honored. I am verklempt. I am . . . wow, that thing is really gaudy, isn’t it? . . . At any rate, my writing experiment from last year, September Songs, was just named as one of five recipients of the prestigious Arte y Pico Award bestowed by Indigo Bunting, the genius behind Route 153. (I am not contractually obligated to use the word “prestigious” every time I mention the prestigious Arte y Pico Award, but I think it adds so much to the name, don’t you?)

Admittedly, this blog was alive for only one month: September 2007. When Sewa Yoleme joined the Dancing About Architecture project—a song a day project—he committed for exactly thirty days. And what a thirty days it was. This blog is like walking into a classroom of musical history and culture.
September Songs was a lot of work, but it was great fun. I think I learned as much as my readers did. And it really does represent my very favorite musical genres. It’s fashionable these days to have eclectic tastes in music, but I fear mine are downright eccentric.
I blush to say that the prestigious Arte y Pico award is given for a blog’s “creativity, design, interesting material, and also contributes to the blogger community, no matter the language.” Actually, the rules say “contrubuites” instead of “contributes,” and “no matter of language,” but I am an editor, after all—I just can’t help myself. Besides, the award creator’s original language is not English, so some allowances must be made.
Wait. The award’s creator makes dolls. And her website features odd little crocheted items: prehistoric animals, bras, carpet runners, fruit. Crustaceans. Previous recipients of the prestigious Arte y Pico award were other crocheters. Hmmm. The author explains:
What is the meaning of the expression: Arte y Pico. And basically, ironically, it translates into a wonderful phrase in Mexico, “lo maximo.” LOL! It will never find its counterpart in English, but if it HAD to, it would be something like, Wow. The Best Art. Over the top.
Never mind. This is now a meme (or so I suppose; I’m still not clear on the whole meme thing), so when Indigo Bunting bestows the award, it really means something wonderful. I think. I hope. Well, it’s prestigious, if nothing else.
Indigo tells me my tiara and sash are in the mail.
